One in every five students in Australia is an international student! In 2016, approximately 400,000 students enrolled in Australian English schools, colleges & universities. At any time, there are approximately 700,000 international students in the country. As a result, the international education sector is Australia's second largest export market.

Eligible courses for a Student visa
To apply for a Student visa, you must first of all be enrolled (registered to study) with an Australian education provider.
Depending on your passport nationality and study & work history, you may be accepted to study and of these qualifications:
Certificate II, III, IV
Diploma, Advanced Diploma
Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma

To study in Australia on a Student visa, expect the following tuition fees.
Depending on your course/program & the quality of the institution you are attending, these are the approximate fees in Australian dollars:
English (ELICOS) = $160-$350/week
Certificate or Diploma = $6,000-$10,000/year
Bachelor or higher = $16,000-$40,000/year
For an education provider to issue your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), the document required to apply for your visa, you generally must pay the first 3-6 months of your tuition + an enrollment fee of between $150-$500.
Additional Costs to become an international student
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
To qualify for a Student visa, applicants have health cover for the entire period of study.
This amount must be paid in full.
For a single student this is approximately $500 per year.
For couples and families the amount is much higher.
Student visa (500) application fee
The price for the visa depends on your past visa history, and where you are located at the time of application.
APPLYING OFFSHORE (outside Australia)
The visa application fee is currently $550, but increases to $560 on July 1, 2017.
APPLYING ONSHORE (in Australia)
If this is the first visa you are applying for while in Australia, it will cost $550, but increases to $560 on July 1, 2017.
If you have previously applied for a visa while in Australia (such as a second Working Holiday), it will cost $1250,but increases to $1,260 on July 1, 2017. The reason....a $700 surcharge is added to all subsequent visa applications.
Money-saving tip: If you leave Australia to apply in another country, the fee will return to $550. Perhaps use the $700 to visit your family!
